Welcome to my BLOG. Let me start off by saying that the thought of having my own blog is frightening. I have to admit that being a math guy I normally don't write that much so this should be an interesting experience. As I am sitting here on my couch I am not sure how I will use this blog but I guess this will be discovered over time. I promise not to make this BLOG too nerdy. I also plan to post from time to time a summary of what is happening in my math classroom.
So most of you know me as Mr. Nelson and since 2015 a few people call me Dr. Nelson. I have been teaching for the South Kingstown school district since 2000 and it has been an amazing 16 years. For my first BLOG post I have decided to post a few things that most people don't know about me. So here we go.....
1) I actually never intended in becoming a middle school math teacher. I actually student taught in a 1st grade classroom in Springfield, Massachusetts. After attending Springfield I took part in a short internship at Walt Disney World. I helped operate the Rock n Roller Coaster at MGM Studios. Upon my return I landed a long term 7th grade math position for a teacher who was out on a medical leave. It took me about two days to realize that I loved teaching middle school students and I went back to school to earn my middle school certification in mathematics. The long term sub position eventually turned into a full time position which I have today.
2) I struggled in math during my middle school years. In fact I really did not enjoy the subject at all. My teachers were wonderful but the subject just did not interest me. I can still remember the battles I had with my parents regarding homework and learning the topic of mathematics. I was not in the "honors" track throughout both middle school or high school. I try to remind myself of this every day when I deal with students who are not particularly excited about being in my math classroom. I now teach college level classes for New England Institute of Technology so I guess things have worked out for the better. The quest to make math an interesting subject is a huge reason why I enjoy teaching.
3) I love professional wrestling. I grew up watching Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant and it has captured my imagination ever since. It was and continues to be my number one choice when I have the remote. I went to college with John Cena who is the face of the WWE.
4) Mrs. Previte introduced me to my eventual wife Jaime in 2003. We were married in 2004 and have two daughters ages 7 and 9. We have two huge dogs Brady and Louie who complete our family. We have a very busy and crazy house but I would not trade it for the world.
I hope you enjoyed my first blog.
